AIS Provides Support for Healthcare Financing & Universal Access for the Caribbean Through Technology

October 21, 2022

Health information technology is critical to the success of healthcare financing, according to Director of Health Applications at Advanced Integrated Systems, Shekar Sanumpudi.

Mr. Sanumpudi was speaking at the 14th annual Caribbean Conference on National Health Financing Initiatives, held in Antigua and Barbuda, from October 19-21, 2022.

The conference is being held under the theme “Confronting the Financial Challenges of COVID-19 and the Unfinished Universal Coverage Agenda.”

In his presentation on the final day, October 21, Mr. Sanumpudi focused on the use and increased need for ‘MIS-IT Applications in Public and Private Facilities in the Caribbean’.

“Insurance premiums are a large part of the funding mechanism for healthcare and technology makes it easier, more efficient and eliminates fraud so that the government, patients and caregiver can benefit from improved access to services, better and more efficient care as well as a seamless process of adjudicating claims.”

AIS is the only company in the Caribbean that offers online, real time insurance claims processing through its Provider Access System which is used by all major health insurance providers, the National Health Fund in Jamaica and NIB in the Bahamas. PAS is currently being used by over five thousand healthcare providers to process pharmacy, medical, dental, lab, optical and hospital claims.

AIS also offers a full suite of health technology solutions for hospitals, doctor’s offices, lab, radiology and pharmacy, including telemedicine, electronic prescription and a document management system. The company has the only comprehensive list of drugs with their unique formulary and code - the Caribbean Drug Codes (CDC).

“I am happy that healthcare financing and the need for universal access are back on the table for the Caribbean. Technology can play a major role in achieving these objectives,” Mr. Sanumpudi pointed out.

He added that some of the benefits of technology to healthcare include increased efficiency of operations through automation, improved data management and decision support, improved diagnosis and treatment, improved healthcare access, fraud reduction and elimination and cost reduction.

The conference was organised by Antigua and Barbuda’s Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment and the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago with support from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) among others.
